Once the realm of pure science fiction, voice-based artificial intelligence is now a reality. Thanks to the help of A. I. like Alexa, Siri, and the Google Assistant, we’re now at the point where it’s entirely possible to listen to the news, see the day’s weather, send a text message, and start watching a video about the best way to fold your socks without looking up from your morning cereal or touching a device. If you’re an Android user, none is more integrated than the Google Assistant. It’s in your phone, it can be in your living room, and it’s ready to help you on the road. Google’s artificial intelligence is as helpful or subtle as you want. But it hasn’t always been this way. Artificial intelligence has gone from fantasy to an integral part of our lives in just a few short years — and in the case of Google Assistant, it has sidled into our homes and lives without doing as much as disturbing the drapes. Here’s the history of how Google’s artificial intelligence came to dominate the Android world. The past is now Look back up the Google Assistant’s family tree and it’s clear Google’s A. owes a lot to at least two previous services. The first and oldest part of Google Assistant is Google Voice Search. Voice Search made its debut on Android smartphones and Chrome for desktop PCs way back in June 2011, and while its functionality was basic by today’s standards, being able to give your phone voice commands marked a serious change in the way we were starting to interact with technology. But Google Now was the real seismic shift in artificial intelligence. Built on Google Voice Search, development of Google Now was code-named “Majel” — after Majel Barrett, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and voice of the computer in many Star Trek series. While also an Easter egg, the code name was clearly a statement of Google’s intent — a dedication to achieving Star Trek ‘s utopian future-tech. While Google Now wasn’t exactly an all-seeing or all-knowing computer, it formed the skeleton of the Google’s Assistant’s highly personalized feed. First introduced in Android 4. 1 Jelly Bean, Google Now delivered your schedule, weather, and other useful information in a series of cards and notifications, letting you know if you needed to leave early for an appointment in order to avoid traffic, or telling you about nearby restaurants. Later updates brought in Gmail integration, and it was even smuggled onto iOS devices as a part of the iOS Google Search app. Like Voice Search, you could ask Google Now questions — but unlike its predecessor, you would get responses spoken out loud, marking an important step toward a true A. experience. While useful, Google Now’s ability to converse was extremely limited, and it wasn’t capable of the sort of intricate conversations Google Assistant is now known for. Most importantly, Google Now also introduced an iconic phrase that would become one of the keystones of the Google Assistant experience — the “OK Google” hotword. The birth and growth of Google Assistant Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends Google Now was a revolution in how we interacted with our phones — but Google Assistant was a snapshot of the future. Despite that grandiose statement, Google’s Assistant began life as a humble extra on Google’s Allo chat app. Its first job was to pop up during chats when useful, or when invited. It wasn’t perfect — and Google was still clearly keeping it at arm’s length from the rest of its services — but it was just the beginning. Google Assistant’s development was being treated differently from anything before it — as evidenced by Google’s hiring of Google Doodle head Ryan Germick and ex-Pixar animator Emma Coats to give the Assistant more personality. But it wasn’t long before Google Assistant broke free of its chains, coming first as a stand-alone feature to the original Google Pixel and the Google Home, before also arriving on other smartphones running Android 6. 0 Marshmallow and above in 2017. This implementation of Assistant is probably the first time we saw the modern Assistant, with an interface that could be called up with the Home button and the ability to reply in a more conversational manner. Though the initial version featured some gulfs between capabilities on mobile and Home speakers, Google reduced that gap as the months went by and quickly added Assistant functionality to its other products. Last year also saw Google announce its intention to add its Assistant to Android TV. Launched alongside the Google Assistant at Google I/O 2016, the Google Home was the first smart speaker to include Google’s Assistant, but it wasn’t the last. Google debuted the Google Home Mini in October 2017 — but most notable was the influx of hardware from other manufacturers with support for the Assistant. Google’s Assistant SDK allowed companies like JBL and LG to quickly include smart functionality in their hardware, without having to develop their own software. The Assistant also made the jump to smart displays, following in Amazon’s footsteps with smart displays from multiple manufacturers, and eventually the Google Home Hub. It’s not just a small smattering of manufacturers that are using Google’s A. — as of May 2018, Google reported that more than 5, 000 devices are now connected with the Google Assistant. The future of the Assistant So what lies ahead for the Google Assistant? Based on everything that’s come before, Google is nowhere near done with developing new features, and it’s highly likely it never will be. Will we look back at where we are now the same way we now look at the primitive nature of Google Now? Google’s latest major addition to the Assistant is Duplex — a feature that allows the Assistant to call businesses and book appointments on your behalf. It responds to questions and alterations in real time, and uses filler words like “um-hm”. It was so convincing that some people worried it could be used to dupe real people. Thankfully, Google assured us that disclosure is built into the software. But Duplex is just the start of a new era for Google Assistant, and with Google’s software having gone from voice search to calling businesses in just seven years, imagine what A. will look like in 20. [64] [65] The Google Assistant allows users to activate and modify vocal shortcut commands in order to perform actions on their device (both Android and iPad/iPhone) or configuring it as a hub for home automation. [66] [67] In July 2018, the Google Home version of Assistant gained support for multiple actions triggered by a single vocal shortcut command. [68] At the annual I/O developers conference on May 8, 2018, Google's SEO announced the addition of six new voice options for the Google Assistant, one of which being John Legend 's. [69] This was made possible by WaveNet, a voice synthesizer developed by DeepMind, which significantly reduced the amount of audio samples that a voice actor was required to produce for creating a voice model. [70] In August 2018, Google added bilingual capabilities to the Google Assistant for existing supported languages on devices. Recent reports say that it may support multilingual support by setting a third default language on Android Phone. [71] As a default option, the Google Assistant doesn't support two common features of the speech recognition on the transcribed texts, like punctuation and spelling. However, a Beta feature of Speech-to-text enables only en-Us language users to ask "to detect and insert punctuation in transcription results. Speech-to-Text can recognize commas, question marks, and periods in transcription requests. [72] In April 2019, the most popular audio games in the Assistant; Crystal Ball and Lucky Trivia have had the biggest voice change in the software history. The voice in the assistant has been able to add expression to the games. For instance, in the Crystal Ball game the voice would speak slow and soft during the intro and before the answer is revealed to make the game more excitable and in the Lucky Trivia game the voice would become excitable like a game show host. In the British accent voice of Crystal Ball, the voice would say the word 'probably' in a downwards slide like she's not too sure. The games used the text to speech voice which makes the voice more robotic. In May 2019 however, it turned out to be a bug in the speech API that caused the games to lose the studio quality voices. These audio games were fixed on May 20th 2019. On December 12, 2019, Google rolled out its interpreter mode for iOS and Android Google Assistant smartphone apps. Interpreter mode allows Google Assistant to translate conversations in real time and was previously only available on Google Home smart speakers and displays. [73] Google Duplex [ edit] This section is about Duplex for Google Assistant. For the number, see googolplex. In May 2018, Google revealed Duplex, an extension of the Google Assistant that allows it to carry out natural conversations by mimicking human voice, in a manner not dissimilar to robocalling. [74] The assistant can autonomously complete tasks such as calling a hair salon to book an appointment, scheduling a restaurant reservation, or calling businesses to verify holiday store hours. [75] While Duplex can complete most of its tasks fully autonomously, it is able to recognize situations that it is unable to complete and can signal a human operator to finish the task. Duplex was created to speak in a more natural voice and language by incorporating speech disfluencies such as filler words like "hmm" and "uh" and using common phrases such as "mhm" and "gotcha", along with more human-like intonation and response latency. [76] [77] [78] Duplex is currently in development and have a limited release in late 2018 with Google Pixel users. [79] During the limited release, Pixel phone users in Atlanta, New York, Phoenix, and San Francisco were only able to use Duplex to make restaurant reservations. [80] Criticism [ edit] After the announcement, concerns were made over the ethical and societal questions that artificial intelligence technology such as Duplex raises. [81] For instance, human operators may not notice that they are speaking with a digital robot when conversing with Duplex, [82] which some critics view as unethical or deceitful. [83] Concerns over privacy were also identified, as conversations with Duplex are recorded in order for the virtual assistant to analyze and respond. [84] Privacy advocates have also raised concerns of how the millions of vocal samples gathered from consumers are fed back into the algorithms of virtual assistants, making these forms of AI smarter with each use. Though these features individualize the user experience, critics are unsure about the long term implications of giving "the company unprecedented access to human patterns and preferences that are crucial to the next phase of artificial intelligence". [85] While transparency was referred to as a key part to the experience when the technology was revealed, [86] Google later further clarified in a statement saying, "We are designing this feature with disclosure built-in, and we'll make sure the system is appropriately identified. " [87] [83] Google further added that, in certain jurisdictions, the assistant would inform those on the other end of the phone that the call is being recorded. [88] Reception [ edit] PC World 's Mark Hachman gave a favorable review of the Google Assistant, saying that it was a "step up on Cortana and Siri. " [89] Digital Trends called it "smarter than Google Now ever was". [90] In July 2019 Belgian public broadcaster VRT NWS published an article revealing that third party contractors paid to transcribe audio clips collected by Google Assistant listened to sensitive information about users. Sensitive data collected from Google Home devices and Android phones included names, addresses, and other private conversations such as business calls or bedroom conversations. [91] From more than 1000 recordings analysed, 153 were recorded without ‘Okay Google’ command. Google officially acknowledged that 0. 2% of recordings is being listened to by language experts to improve Google's services. You need only tell Google Assistant, "Wake me up at 8 a. m., " to set an alarm. If you're bored with the regular alarms, you can even say "Wake me up at 8 a. m. to Pink, " and it will play selected songs from her. You can pick any song, artist, or playlist, and Google Assistant will draw from the default music service you specified. Using Google Routines, you can also set an alarm to trigger other actions. The all-star Les Misérables staged concert will be broadcast live in cinemas on 2 December, it has been announced. A screening of the all-star staged concert will play across the UK, Ireland and the USA, with tickets going on sale on 4 November. Cameron Mackintosh has also announced an album and DVD release in early 2020 and that the concert production will tour the UK and overseas later in 2020 and in 2021.
