Great great movie. One of the top 2019. Great acting. Great script. Edge of the seat till the end. In the era of super stupid super hero movies - a welcome relive. This was a good story but the finished product just didn't have enough punch to make it a good film. They had good actors but wasted their talent with a hurried rushed script that didn't give them enough believability that opened up plot holes the size of the grand canyon. I really like Joel and Rose and tried to give this film some scenic leeway but it tried to be something it wasn't and ended flat. I think with a better script, more grit, and clean up some of the plausibility problems then rhis could have garnered a better score. As it stands its only fair. and barely.

First Hit: I was, and even a day later, confused by this story and film.
We're really introduced to Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) and Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) when Gilda walks up to Cristi and asks to speak with him in his apartment. Cristi whispers into her ear that he apartment is bugged, so she kisses him and tells him she'll play the part of a hooker, and they can whisper her request, which is to help her by getting a criminal, Zsolt, out of prison.
In an early scene, Cristi is on a ferry heading to an island where the ancient people use to communicate by whistling. Cristi is part of a plot working with other criminals to free Zsolt and to do this he has to learn the whistling language.
The language breaks vowels and consonants into seven whistling sounds. This lesson in this language was the most exciting part of the film. I was fascinated with Cristi learning how to whistle and wanted to practice, along with him, right in the theater.
As the film develops, some parts led me to believe that the story in the movie was pre-planned, and I missed something as the film progressed. At other times, I felt as though Cristi and Gilda were planning the ending along the way because they'd fallen for each other.
As an undercover detective, Cristi works for an unnamed woman place by Rodica Lazar, who is trying to play both ends of this story.
The result is a film that has the appearance of a storyline running at two different levels, but in the end, the person sitting next to me asked if he missed something about how the ending worked out, I said "I don't know, and I still don't.
Ivanov was quietly compelling as the detective who was also on the take. Marlon was excellent as the woman who seemed totally in control of story behind the plot. Lazar was strong as the head of the investigation and also susceptible to corruption. Corneliu Porumboiu wrote and directed this quizzical story that left me hanging.
Overall: I either missed a critical section of this Romanian film or the story was attempting to be too elusive.

 

I started watching your videos around the time you made your Atlantic crossing. Now I am going back to the beginning to see the episodes I missed. Right from the beginning your videos have been very professional. Each day for a good while I have seen at least 3 of your videos. I feel like I know you both. Malin has a wonderful and contagious smile. Johan can fix anything, and I greatly admire his spirit of adventure.

Straight off, this movie is totally different to what you may be used when thinking about Romanian movies. Starting with the story, the cast (Catrinel Marlon is magnificent) the scenery, smart humor and hidden little gems (references to various famous scenes in other movies) this film makes you think you're watching more of a Hollywood movie than a Romanian one, although, as a downside, I must say certain characters seem to be portrayed a bit simplistic.
The story is, to some extent, a typical police one, but the twist of using the whistling language from Gomera Island enriches the plot all around as it unfolds.
I really liked the movie and I would be happy if it sets the new trend in Romanian Cinema.

To answer your question, you have to know a bit about how sound works. Whistles are caused by vibrations of the mouth that create compressions and rarefactions in the air (sound is a longitudinal wave). The air spaces either between your tongue and teeth or tongue and the roof of your mouth create a resonant chamber that vibrates when you blow air through it. You can change the size of the chamber by moving your mouth/tongue to create different pitches. The entire point of using fingers is to amplify the whistle, and although not exclusive to you, many people find it much louder to use fingers. This is because putting fingers into the mouth makes it so that air passes over the resonant chamber faster, allowing for a louder, fuller sound. This also stabilizes your mouth whistle and lets you blow harder. I wouldn't exactly call is dirtier or less healthy, however. If one has basic hygiene skills and washes their hands this shouldn't be a problem. And although I cannot speak for these speakers, I imagine that the way they whistle is also part of the tradition and a component in keeping the original "language" alive. Before you call anything "dirty" or "unsanitary" it's always better to take into the account the culture you are slandering. Like many other places in the world, people will not do things exactly like you; it's better to try to understand a culture first and the reasoning behind it, instead of dismissing it as something arbitrarily gross or distasteful.

Garajonay National Park One of the best things to do in La Gomera is a visit to the stunning forest of Garajonay. This misty and ancient forest is one of the last of its kind. Garajonay laurel forest is a subtropical and humid forest with springs, streams and around 2, 000 species of flora and fauna. The park covers a third of the island and for nature enthusiasts the park is home to reptiles, amphibians and birds, many of which are endemic. Hikers can venture to the islands highest peak at 1, 487 meters and enjoy astonishing views of the island. The forest is named after a myth ‘Gara and Jonay’. The Canarian version of Romeo & Juliet, Gara from La Gomera & Jonay from Tenerife ran away to the island’s highest point but tragically jumped to their deaths. Visit Juego de Bolas visitor centre for great information on the park. Garajonay National Park 7. Roque de Agando This symbolic and emblematic rock formation is a La Gomera attraction not to miss. Museo Ethnografico This museum of Ethnography, located in a historic building, covers the island’s natural resources and ecosystems including fishing, forestry, agriculture and farming. Great for walkers the park is covered in natural beauty, wildlife and fascinating flora and fauna. It is known to be in one of the wildest areas of the island with deep ravines covering 1, 757 hectares. Parque Natural Majona Practical Information La Gomera weather: best time to visit As with all the Canary Islands, Temperatures in La Gomera vary little. The temperatures and humidity feel very comfortable all year round. There is little chance of rain, other than further inland. The hottest time of year in La Gomera is August to September with average temperatures in the mid 20*C’s. How to get to La Gomera La Gomera cannot be reached directly by air from Europe but you can fly directly to Tenerife and travel by ferry to La Gomera. Keep in mind that the original image shows a bit more than this one, because I had to crop out a tiny mountain village to comply with Earthporn rules. This shot is from an island called La Gomera. It is one of the Canary islands, I think it is the least populated one and definetly with least tourists. The area is called Vallehermoso - which means "beautiful valley" directly translated. Not many poeple there, but I did meet a few trekkers. The whole area has a huge network of trails. It is a so-called trekker's paradise. Stayed there for one week, lived in the cropped out town below and walked and explored almost non-stop. The highest point you see here is called Roque Cano. You can climb it if you have skills and equipment. I didn't climb it. Because I don't have skills, nor equipment. I did a long exposure for this shot - 67 seconds - with a dark filter placed in front of the lens, which reduces the amount of light the camera can capture. This is why the sky looks like it does. It is something I often like to do. I think it adds a cool atmosphere.
